Installations

installationsI serve as Founding/Artistic Director for Voices Breaking Boundaries, and I produce living room art shows, and also create installations for the productions. November 2009: I created a sound and image installation, Listening from Within, at Voices Breaking Boundaries's season opener Honoring Dissent / Descent. The installation was in honor of my father, Dr. Mohammad Sarwar, who passed away in May 2009. For the piece, I used images from the early years of my father's life when he was an active leader of the student movement in Karachi, from his marriage to my mother, and from social/artistic/political gatherings that they attended or organized. The images also include digital shots that I took through Skype. The production was held in my residence in Houston, and I dedicated my study to this installation, decorating a simple bed with white sheets and some rose petals. The desk contained copies of his writings. The installation also played two soundtracks on opposite ends of the room, one containing voices of Dr. Badar Siddiqui, Dr. Muzaffar Qazilbash, and others, while the second soundtrack held the voice of Tina Sani singing at my father's Karachi reference.
