During the first ten days of Mohurrum…

Sehba Sarwar
09 Jan, 2009

During the first ten days of Mohurrum, there is an intensity in the air. It doesn’t matter if one practices or not, we all conform to the notion of grieving. We are conscious of the colors we wear, the music we listen to or don’t. The procession in Old...

Another day trip…

07 Jan, 2009

Another day trip, this time to Sehwan Sharif, a city I have always wanted to visit. Here, Mohurrum is observed with dedication by all, shias and sunnis alike. The procession that happens on the seventh day of Mohurrum is led by camels.

Our expedition to Hala and Bhit Shah…

30 Dec, 2008

Our expedition to Hala and Bhit Shah is born spontaneously. But that’s how things happen around here. Sometimes, one can plan and organize, and even still nothing moves. But then, at the spur of a moment, at a gathering with friends, one simply says, I would love to go...

In the meantime, tension escalated between Pakistan and India as there was talk of troops build- up on...

25 Dec, 2008

It’s been almost a week since we’ve been in Karachi. In the house, electricity weaves in and out of...

a moment that's difficult to record…

22 Dec, 2008

I’m visiting Zainab Market with my friend and her cousin, a slender young woman, who guides us to a jeans store off the main road. Apparently the store, which sells fitted jeans and pants, has a reputation among upper-class women who wear western clothing. Once we step into the...

13 Dec, 2008

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been asked by a lot of people to write my views about the bombings in Mumbai. While I’ve felt the same anger and grief as many others, I also have had misgivings about the terminology used in the west as a response to...

I was inspired to begin my blog when I visited the library at my alma mater, Mount Holyoke College, and saw a framed photograph of my friends and me calling for divestment of funds from South Africa.

In 2007,  I began a blog when I visited my alma mater and saw a framed photograph of my friends and me calling for divestment of funds from South Africa. I use the blog to document my movement between spaces, Houston, Karachi, Delhi, Dhaka, Los Angeles and elsewhere, recording observations, images and conversations. Here, I document the multiple realities that I inhabit – writer, artist, mother, activist, educator, and transnational. Interviews from my blog were exhibited at Houston’s Baker Ripley Community Center (2014) and at Houston Public Library in downtown (2015). My papers are archived at the University of Houston’s library.
