minal-isms

12 Aug, 2011

As we listen to Tina Sani’s new album, Bahar Aayi, with Faiz Ahmed Faiz lyrics, Minal says: “I’m so glad you were born in Pakistan so we can listen to this music.” Earlier in the day, she comments: “How do squirrels know their partners if they all look the...

last morning at macondo…

Sehba Sarwar
31 Jul, 2011

As always, Macondo is a rich gathering with old and new friends. Throughout the week, we are inspired by readings and talks with Julia Alvarez, Naomi Shihab Nye, Esmeralda Santiago, Helena Maria Viramontes—and of course, Sandra Cisneros. On Saturday morning, I walk past the ducks that squat along the...

Our flight did leave on time but Karachi’s international departure lounge was packed with people with barely enough standing room since all PIA flights were delayed. By the time we landed in Dubai, it was already 3:00 am Karachi time. The airplane coasted along the airport runway for ten...

The day we are flying out is packed with drama. My mother is supposed to head out to the airport a few hours before us to catch a flight to Lahore, but a few hours before her flight is to take off a friend calls us and alerts us...

last minute attempts

17 Jul, 2011

I’ve been trying to go to Bohri Bazaar for weeks. Today, one day before my departure, I inform everyone, “I’m going.” “The traffic’s supposed to be terrible,” my sister Beena says. “There’s some sort of strike—electrical company issues this time. And the streets are jammed.” “Let’s just go,” I...

Before we go to bed the previous night, we learn about the Mumbai bombings, but when we wake up in the morning, we sense new tension in the air as a result of a statement made by Dr. Zulfikar Mirza. The city is once again at a standstill as...

more trouble in the city

12 Jul, 2011

The internet connection at our house has been more erratic lately, making the job of regular blogging more of a challenge. In the meantime, the violence has subsided in Orangi and Qasbah Colony, but has now flared up in Lyari where a random murder caused the death of seven...

In the backdrop of all our adventures, the political environment in Karachi is tense. Over the past few days, the Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) has walked out from participating in the current government and tension grows. In our corner of the city, things are quiet. But even as we...

Over the past few days, life has been busy. A few days ago, I went with family to see Shoaib Mansur’s new feature film Bol, and I spent time at Koel to meet with the young founders of a grassroots group, D.U.C.K, who initiate social service projects around the...

Minal stands barefoot in the living room and places her foot next to a black rain-ant, the size of two of her fingernails put together. As the ant moves to one side, Minal drops to the ground to watch it closer. As a result of pending rain, many rain...

02 Jul, 2011

Today is Ammi’s birthday, and she receives three streams of visitors who bring cake, flowers and other treats. At night we drop by for a late tea at Asif and Seemi Farrukhi’s home and experience a living room art moment when poet Zehra Nigah reads an essay about Indian...

I was inspired to begin my blog when I visited the library at my alma mater, Mount Holyoke College, and saw a framed photograph of my friends and me calling for divestment of funds from South Africa.

In 2007,  I began a blog when I visited my alma mater and saw a framed photograph of my friends and me calling for divestment of funds from South Africa. I use the blog to document my movement between spaces, Houston, Karachi, Delhi, Dhaka, Los Angeles and elsewhere, recording observations, images and conversations. Here, I document the multiple realities that I inhabit – writer, artist, mother, activist, educator, and transnational. Interviews from my blog were exhibited at Houston’s Baker Ripley Community Center (2014) and at Houston Public Library in downtown (2015). My papers are archived at the University of Houston’s library.
