By sheer coincidence, we find a public school in Pasadena that offers similar programs to those in Minal’s Houston school – her new school is International Baccalaureate and also offers a Spanish-English dual language stream.
I drop her off in the morning. She lugs a heavy backpack, but seems calm and ready for new adventure. As I walk out of the building, I notice how curling flags drop from the circular verandah and that the Pakistani flag dangles from one entrance. I wonder if during the course of her day Minal will hear a conversation that India is celebrating its Independence Day today and that Pakistan’s was yesterday.
